Dear Parents/Carers,

thanks to the staff and much appreciated help of the following parents on the day;

Bellad, Radha Venkataramaiah and Kulveen Goindi

Halloway and Carla Fry,

Farmyard Animals
The two saddleback pigs have now gone to market having being collected by our local friendly farmer Mr Potts. If any parents would be interested in various organic cuts of meat or sausages for a voluntary contribution please see Mr Owens or Mrs Gilbert. We shall ‘in return’ be taking deliveries of some new piglets in about 2 weeks plus some additional laying hens.

Tree and Garden Works
Neil Moore (husband of Rebecca who is one of our Midday Supervisors) is currently helping with some landscape design and tree work in and around the kitchen gardens and new eco-classroom.
This eco classroom and an additional classroom are near to completion. The external grounds work may take a little longer and Neil is supporting the school in his capacity as a tree surgeon. Mike Cox has provided the monies towards a new polytunnel and Neil has helped clear and prepare the grounds ready for
installation – again in a few weeks. The mini greenhouse has arrived courtesy of the Morrison’s voucher scheme and I could do with some volunteers to help put the greenhouse together. The ground is prepared and already slabbed. Hopefully everything will come together ready for just after Easter.

Spanish Visit
Carlos Crespo arrived safety back in Spain on Sunday. He thoroughly enjoyed his stay and really appreciated the warm reception that school and the hosting families provided for him. We have received a letter of thanks from his tutor Fernando who said “the students have, without a single exception, been given a unique opportunity to experience the real school life at work and they have all gained much from role models of excellent practice in your classrooms and schools”. We look forward to hosting another student next year from Avila.

Home Access Scheme: Free Laptops for Low Income Families

The Home Access Scheme is a £300 million government programme that aims to provide 270,000 low-income families across the UK with a free computer and broadband access. The scheme is part of a drive to close the digital and educational divide between rich and poor and to help towards keeping parents in touch with their child’s progress.
Home Access computers will be loaded with a suite of software to support literacy and numeracy for all the family, following successful pilots that showed pupils could improve by two GCSE grades with a computer at home, whilst also making it easier for unemployed parents to apply for on-line jobs and gain better computer skills.
Families with children between the ages of 7 and 14 years will be able to apply for a grant to buy a computer and broadband connection from an approved supplier. However, they must also either be entitled to free school meals or the household receives one of the following qualifying benefits: income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income Support, Child Tax Credit (not Working Tax Credit) and an income of less than £16,040, income-based Employment Support Allowance or the Guaranteed element of the Pension Credit. Applicants will also have to meet the following eligibility criteria:
- They have a child aged between 7 and 14 years
- They attend a state-maintained school in England or have
- their place paid for by an English Local Authority or the Department of Children, Schools and Families (DCSF)
- They have not benefited under the Home Access or Computers for Pupils schemes in the past.
No minimum or maximum grant sizes are specified.
Looked after children up to the age of 18 will also receive laptops, and the scheme will offer bespoke packages to provide more support for children with special educational needs. Further information, along with application forms to apply for a Home Access Grant, is available at: www.homeaccess.org.uk

MORE MONEY FOR YOU AND THE KIDS
– information from Nottinghamshire County Council From November 2009 more families will be able to get help with paying rent and Council Tax. Why? Because Child Benefit will be ignored as income when working out who qualifies for Housing and Council Tax Benefit. Families on a low wage or on certain benefits will now get extra help for the first time. Could you and your kids be better off?
Call your local council to find out if you can now get Housing or Council Tax Benefit.
