Dear Parents/Carers,

Disasters Earthquake Commission

HAITI EARTHQUAKE APPEAL

Non-uniform Day Friday 29th January
Mr Owens spoke to everyone about the Haiti Earthquake on Monday and asked if
anyone had seen the pictures on the news. Then he asked for practical ideas
about how we could help. After discussion we decided on ‘Hats for Haiti’
combined with non-uniform and a whole school Cake and Biscuit Sale.
Today children were asked to either come in non-uniform in the colours of the
Haiti flag (red and blue); wear a hat or support this appeal by making or buying
cakes or biscuits. We asked for a donation of at least £1 per family and so far we
have raised £259.
Report by Sophie Lloyd, Lorenza Squitieri, Daniel Cook, Ranjeet Dhaliwal-
Gordon, Charlotte Lee and Ellie Owadally.

Eco Update

Edwalton’s Eco team has been working hard investigating wildlife in Winter. We
have been finding out about birds that are around during the winter months and
drawing a selection of them. This will help us create a new display in the hall. We
are also taking part in the great school bird watch over the next few weeks when
each class will be making a record of all the birds they see in the playground. We
would also like to remind you that this weekend is the official ‘big garden bird
watch’ where the RSPB would like you to watch birds for an hour in your garden
and record which ones visit. Find out more at www.rspb.co.uk

International Day - Fri 5 February and Carlos our Spanish visitor

Carlos is now in week 3 of his visit and he is really enjoying his time in our school
and with the hosting families. So far he has taken part in lessons across the
school in all age groups and has managed to explore Nottingham during his free
time. Next weekend he hopes to visit Liverpool to find out a bit more about the
Beatles! Thank you to everyone who has been so friendly and made him feel at
home in Edwalton.

Next week Carlos will also be part of our International day where the whole school
are to be mixed into different classes and will be finding out about either Japan,
China and India. By the end of this week the children will know the country they
will be in and therefore the dress or colours of the flag they can wear. All kinds of
activities will be taking place on the day and if you would like to help or could offer
expertise on any of these countries please just pop in to see Miss Teasdale.

If you haven’t already sent your contribution of £2 for International Day please
send it to the office as soon as possible. Thank you.

Polytunnel Grant

Councillor Mike Cox will be presenting the Eco-Team with a cheque for £2,000 on Monday 1st February in assembly at 9.15am. Last year the Eco Team wrote to him requesting sponsorship of a Polytunnel project and now he has been able to donate money towards this project through the council’s Discretionary Award Grants. We are extremely grateful to Councillor Cox and have ordered our polytunnel already! The polytunnel will be situated near the school farm. We are all excited about the potential possibilities that this latest addition to our grounds will bring.

Anti-Racism Training

Next week the staff will be undertaking anti-racist training and raising awareness of such issues. This is all part of our determination for raising outcomes for all children but especially our black and ethnic minority children. The staff meeting will involve all our staff, representatives from the midday staff and kitchen staff plus Kids’ Club. Should any members of the Parents’ Association, Governing Body or parents wish to attend please get in touch so I can ascertain numbers.

Saplings Class Photographs
Please ensure that all orders are returned by Friday 5th February at 9am. Any orders received after this date will still be processed, but parents will have to make their own arrangements to post and collect the orders.

Swimming
There are still 16 contributions outstanding for Holly Class and Beech Class swimming sessions and 26 contributions outstanding for the other classes who have been swimming since September 2009. Please would you send the £6 contributions to the office as soon as possible. We are £252 short. This debt has to be paid from the overall school budget. The office has already sent several kindly reminders.

The Real Sausage Challenge
School Food Matters / School Farms Network Competition

Real Food Festival – Earls Court 7 – 10 May 2010
School Food Matters and the School Farms Network have teamed up to bring school farms in England an exciting competition. Four short-listed schools will get to showcase their school farm at the Real Food Festival in May. Mrs Godber, Mrs Gilbert and Mrs Watson from Kids’ Club will be organising Edwalton’s entry with the children.
May the best sausage win!

CARTRIDGE RECYCLING

We are still collecting empty ink cartridges. However, we are only able to re-cycle:
DELL, CANON, HP and LEXMARK (no brand substitutes can be accepted)
School is no longer able to recycle BROTHER, EPSON or any other brand compatible cartridges and cannot recycle any make of toner cartridges. To help us, please only send in what we are able to collect. Thank you.
Some cartridges have a high re-cycling value and we will continue to cash these in to boost school funds. Others on the list have a low/no cash value and we will donate these to Childline to support their current campaign.
